Agriculture
There was a time when there were a hundred farm holdings in our municipality. Today, only a dozen or so remain, although they have nothing in common with the traditional farms from the days long ago. They are now highly specialised small and medium-sized businesses.
Little by little, the high price of milk quotas compelled milk producing farmers to give up this type of production and revert to corn and soy production. In the late 80’s the Québec government passed an Agricultural Zoning law that enforced the protection of good farming soils, a law which gave rise to many heated discussions.
The arguments such as; the right to produce, the citizens’ quality of life or even protection of the environment are still an open debate. Co-habiting with the non-agricultural environment is an upcoming challenge awaiting farmers.
